At Missouri Prison Reform, we are horrified by the alarming reality unfolding at Jefferson City Correctional Center (JCCC). The current Director of Nursing (DON) is not just failing in her duties; she is actively contributing to a culture of neglect and suffering that endangers the lives of those in her care. It is time to demand her immediate termination.
A Grievous Death Toll: How Many More Lives Must Be Lost?
Residents have spoken out, declaring, “The death count keeps rising at JCCC.” This chilling statement reflects a tragic reality that we cannot ignore. The facility is plagued by poor medical conditions, with residents frequently denied essential healthcare and suffering from inadequate treatment. The current DON is making these dire conditions worse, systematically denying care and fostering an environment where neglect is rampant. How many more lives must be sacrificed before we demand her removal? The blood of those who suffer is on her hands.
A Pattern of Lies and Deceit
The current DON has shown a blatant disregard for the health and well-being of residents. Just recently, she called a resident’s medical advocate and lied about critical healthcare laws. This call was recorded, capturing her attempts to mislead those who are trying to help residents get the treatment they deserve. She is clearly more focused on enforcing her own misguided policies than on the needs of the individuals relying on her care.
Disregarding Federal Law and Basic Human Decency
On September 11, 2024, during a critical encounter, the DON dismissed the role of Veterans Affairs in the healthcare of a 100% disabled veteran. “She told me the Veterans Affairs has no say in my health care,” he recounted, despite federal laws requiring that service-connected injuries be addressed. This kind of attitude is not just disrespectful; it undermines the very foundation of healthcare rights for residents.
In a shocking display of arrogance, she claimed that approved reasonable accommodation requests under the Americans with Disabilities Act would expire within a year. However, these accommodations are valid for the duration of a resident’s imprisonment. Her assertion that Centurion’s policies override the ADA—an established federal law—demonstrates a dangerous lack of understanding and accountability.
A Toxic and Dangerous Environment
Former staff members have described the current DON as unprofessional and unethical. Reports from her time at Licking confirm that she is “high conflict and full of drama.” Her short tenure has proven these statements to be true, as she demeans both staff and patients alike. Accounts of her “uncontrollable temper tantrums” in front of residents reveal a leader who creates an unsafe environment for everyone involved.
We Demand Immediate Action!
We are calling on all advocates and community members to unite and demand the termination of the current DON. Her negligence and deceit are directly contributing to the suffering and deaths of those entrusted to her care. While the Missouri Department of Corrections may not have the power to fire her, Centurion Health must act decisively to remove her from her position immediately.
